See what is happening in the Counseling Office!

 

Celebrate National School Counselor Week with us!

February 6-10 is National School Counselor week!  We have events planned throughout the week to celebrate the services that the LHS Counseling and Social Work Department provides to our school community!

  • Monday during Liberty Hour:  Students can stop in the LMC for help with scholarships,  college applications, and final questions about next year’s course offerings.
  • Tuesday during 1st and 2nd Period:  Students interested in law and criminal justice are invited to attend our monthly Career Connections in the LMC.   Limit of 60 students so reserve your seat now by registering through the LHS counseling  website!
  • Wednesday:  Wear your favorite college or military t-shirt!
  • Thursday at 7:15 AM:  Coffee and Tea with the Counselors.  Parents are invited to join the counselors and social workers for an early morning session in the LMC on mental health awareness.   
  • Friday during Liberty Hour:  Celebrate Black History Month!  Join the LHS Diversity Club in the Counseling Conference Room during Liberty Hour!  We will be listening to student’s favorite black music artists and poets!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Coffee With Counselors

Thursday, February 9 at 7:15 AM:  Parents are invited to join the counselors and social workers for an early morning session in the LMC. The topic is Mental Health Awareness.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Missouri Girls State

Missouri Girls State Notice of Interest forms are due to the Counseling office by Wednesday, February 8th to be considered for Girls State.  Missouri Girls State is an intensive week of government study and Americanism training sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.  The dates of Missouri Girls State is June 25 - July 1, 2017.  Delegates must be able to attend the entire event.  For more information please contact Trilaina McCallum at tmccallum@liberty.k12.mo.us.

Missouri Boys State

Missouri Boys State Notice of Interest forms are due to the Counseling office by Wednesday, February 8th.  Missouri Boys State is an eight-day hands-on experience in the operation and fundamentals of government. Students who submit their forms on time will be invited to attend a meeting with the Missouri Boys State representative Bettie Rusher on Monday, February 13th at 1:00 PM and to speak with previous delegates before completing the application.  The dates of Missouri Boys State is June 17-24, 2017.  Delegates must be able to attend the entire event.  For more information please contact Trilaina McCallum at tmccallum@liberty.k12.mo.us.

ACT Workshops Available!
Are you planning to take the February ACT?  Check out these opportunities to prepare!

  • Free ACT Bootcamp at the Excelsior Area Career Center on January 31 from 7:45 AM to 2:00 PM. Students may ride the career center bus.  Lunch is $5.00 or bring your own.  Sign up in the counseling office.
  • Free ACT Practice Test at the Tutoring Center, 9775 North Cedar in Kansas City,  on February 4 at at 12:30 PM.  Call 781-0000 to register.
  • Free Online ACT Prep on your Family Connection account page.  Log into FC from the LHS Counseling website using your school username and password.

NCAPS application Deadline is approaching Feb 16, 2017

Students interested in spending part of their day in a an authentic, professional learning environment should consider the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies.  Strands:

New Scholarships for Juniors!

 

KC Scholars

$10,000 annual, renewable scholarships will be awarded to 250 juniors in the Kansas City metro area.

High school 11th graders can apply for up to $10,000/year for up to five years.  Students must enroll in college full-time beginning the fall semester immediately following high school graduation at one of the 17 colleges or universities in the KC Scholars network. Students are also required to complete GPA and graduation requirements their senior year in order to receive the scholarship the first year of college. Annually, 250 awards will be made.  Application is Due March 3, 2017   Apply now!   http://www.kcscholars.org/traditional/

 

Additional opportunity: The Coolidge Scholarship is open for current juniors!  “The Coolidge” is a full-ride scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study and can be used at any accredited U.S. college or university. Coffee with the Counselors Cancellation Announcement

The January Coffee with Counselors covering the topic of AP classes has been cancelled. All parents are encouraged to attend AP Information Night on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 PM.  If you are unable to attend the evening event and have questions about AP classes, please contact your student’s counselor.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration!  

All students and parents are invited to attend the MLK Celebration at William Jewell College on Monday, January 16 at 10 AM in the Gano Chapel.  Click HERE for details.

NCAPS Open House
Last Information Session for 2017-2018 Applicants/Parents

On January 18th, NCAPS will be hosting their final information session for anyone interested in hearing more about the program. The event will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Gladstone Community Center.  Strands for next year include: Information Technology, Digital Media, Medicine and Health Care, Global Logistics, Global Business and Entrepreneurship, and Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing.


Students wishing to be considered for the NCAPS program will need to apply no later than February 17, 2017.

Incoming Freshman Parent Night--Tuesday, January 10th, 6:30 - 8 PM at Liberty High School

The LHS Counseling & Social Work Department will be hosting our annual Incoming Freshman Parent Night for current 8th grade parents whose children will be attending LHS next school year.  The evening will begin with a presentation by LHS counselors outlining the enrollment process, course sequencing, graduation requirements, and post-secondary planning. From 7-8 PM you are invited to attend an Academic Fair to give parents an opportunity to meet with teachers from a variety of academic departments at LHS and get information about classes, prerequisites, and more.  Please direct any questions about this event to Scott Gillespie at bsgillespie@liberty.k12.mo.us.
